How does the IYTC membership structure work?

Official membership status in IYTC can be acquired by filling out an application form which you can find on the IYTC website. In order to properly submit the application form, there is a minimum $20 donation requirement and some proof that indicates said donation has been made (you can take a screenshot).  Once membership is confirmed, an IYTC representative may reach out and correspond with any new members to discuss their desired involvement. All IYTC members are emailed opportunities to participate in our monthly legislative and educational activities.
 

 

Who looks over the application once they’re submitted?

The application is looked over by the new board of directors.
Do I need to fill out the application questions if I want to be on the board but don’t want to serve in an officer position?
No, you would just fill out the membership form to be on the board of directors.

 

What is the time commitment for being a board member? An officer? A general member?

The time commitment for a board member is highly variable, varying around 2-4 hours a week. There are also board meetings once a month that last around 2-3 hours. In addition, all board members are required to be on committees which can call for about 1 hour a week. A regional officer will have a lesser time commitment, around 1 hour a week. A general member has no required time commitment but will be provided with various legislative and international educational opportunities that they may participate in when they choose.

 

How many legislative opportunities can I participate in a year?

All board members are required to participate in two legislative opportunities within each term. Regional officers and general members do not have such requirements, but there are more than ten opportunities offered per term that members are free to participate in.

 

Where will the money I donate be used for?

The money will be used fully for the operation of the nonprofit, including to fund our education events, social media endeavors, and any other internal or external fees that come with running an organization. It will also be used to pay for the IYTC T-shirt that every member gets.

 

Can you explain the “Give 50 Donate 50” membership fee?

The “Give” $50 refers to an officer’s own personal donation to IYTC. The “Donate” $50 prompts you to seek donations for the organization from those around you, including family, friends, and the community by spreading the word about the organization and what you hope to accomplish. This totals to a $100 donation.  

Can you apply for more than one position?

You can apply for multiple positions, even between regional and national positions as well. However, if appointed, you will only be allowed to hold a maximum of two positions.

 

What is the difference between being a “National Director” and a “Director on the Board?”

Board Director is a general term used for all members of the Board, while a National Officer holds a specific national position. All National Directors are required to serve on the Board due to their importance in the organization’s operation. 

 

Do I need experience in tobacco control to be considered for a National Director position?

Though telling us about your experience can help us to better see how you would fit into the Board and the contributions you could make, you definitely don't need previous experience to be considered for the Board. Expressing a strong interest in tobacco control or sharing experience in comparable advocacy can also show just how well you could fit in as a Board officer and that you have the drive to make contributions.

How do I know if you have received my application?

Once you have submitted your application, within 1-2 business days, you should receive an email confirming your application submission and if you are missing any needed items.
